How to get started
So, we have a couple of recommendations to fight this invisible enemy without big investments or changes:
- Embrace Data Governance: start by recognizing that data is a strategic asset rather than just a byproduct of operations. This involves establishing clear policies, roles, and responsibilities that define how data is created, stored, accessed, and maintained. By implementing robust stewardship practices and continuous monitoring, teams can ensure data remains accurate and secure. Ultimately, when stakeholders are empowered to leverage trusted data in everyday decision-making, data governance becomes integral to an organization’s growth and innovation.
- Craft tech integration: by defining a team in charge of analyzing the technologies currently in use, determining which to embrace and which to discard, and starting to integrate teams and departments, you can start changing the company culture into a data-driven one. Build a team with a Data Governance Architect, the SMEs of your tech stack, and one SME for each business department. Their main task will be to share information about how data is being used from the business point of view, how it is being prepared, and what the common/frequent issues are. This will end in the first version of a data lineage/data catalog for the organization.
- Cross-departmental committee: the objective of the committee is to ensure alignment between strategic objectives and technological initiatives. By bringing together diverse experience using data and tools as both developer and end-user, it will help identify and prioritize projects that deliver business value, maintain clear communication channels between departments, and encourage sharing information and data across the entire organization. This committee will also help the data governance team establish common standards and keep nurturing the data catalog / data lineage.
- Business Solutions Architect: think about that person in your team who shares interest in both the business and technical side, that person always thinking about how to improve or automate a specific task, and upskill them to Business Solutions Architect. The BSA will work closely with stakeholders to understand business requirements, identify appropriate technologies, and ensure seamless integration of systems, always aligned with the IT governance framework. The main objective is to develop a common language between the business and technical team.
- Upskill your team: make a training plan to upskill your team in the chosen technologies and in the new data governance actions defined. Every team needs to be aware of the data governance process and have access to the data catalog / data lineage initiative. Every team in the organization needs to be working closely with the BSA and the Data Governance team, identifying missing data assets or fixing business definitions to the existing ones. They need to know and feel that they have the key role in a healthy data governance initiative, and only that way will the organization become truly data-driven.
- Fine tuning of chosen techs: once you have all the pieces together, you are capable of defining a roadmap to improve your existing platforms or solutions by fine tuning business processes using the same technologies you already use. We tend to think innovation is only about using the newest technology or the top-notch hardware, but we can’t be more wrong. Improving a business process by automating it, removing manual tasks, improving data validation or automated notifications: any action that improves time or efficiency is innovation. Combining the Data Governance team, the cross-departmental committee and the BSA, you will be able to develop better solutions for each one of your existing business processes.
Overcoming data silos isn’t just a technical challenge: it’s a strategic imperative. By embracing data governance, fostering collaboration, and optimizing existing technologies, utilities can unlock the full potential of their data. The path to a data-driven organization starts with small, intentional steps that lead to greater efficiency, improved customer experiences, and long-term innovation.
